Trichy to get a new IIIT at Bharatidasan Institute of Technology Trichy Campus

The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) will start functioning temporarily on the premises of Bharatidasan Institute of Technology (BIT) at Tiruverumbur in Trichy district. This arrangement would begin from the upcoming academic year 2013-14.

Chief Minister of TamilNadu Ms. Jayalalithaa issued an order in this regard, considering the interests of the prospective students and the time it might take to set up the infrastructure.

Being developed jointly by the Centre and State governments and industrial bodies in Sethurapatti in Srirangam taluk, the IIIT  costing  Rs.128 crore would come up on over 56 acres of land, said the release.

TamilNadu government’s sanction for establishing a permanent campus at Sethurapatti near the Chief Minister's Srirangam Assembly constituency coincided with the introduction of IIIT Bill 2013 in the Lok Sabha for establishment of 20 such institutions at the rate of one in every major State in partnership with the private sector.

Once approved by the Parliament, the law will accord IIITs the status of national importance on par with IITs and IIMs.

4 IIITs

At present, four IIITs exist in Gwalior,  Jabalpur, Allahabad and Kancheepuram, all of which were established during the eleventh plan period till March 2012.

According to the Bill that was cleared by the Union Cabinet last year, out of the outlay of Rs.128 crore, the Centre will contribute fifty per cent, and the State government 35 per cent, and the remaining share of  15 per cent will be from the private sector .

For establishing the IIIT in Srirangam on Public-Private-Partnership model, six companies including Cognizant, Tata Consultancy Services,  Infosys and Take Solutions have so far given their consent, according to official sources.

The sanctioned fund has to be utilised for campus development, installation of intelligent security system, creation of self-contained placement centre, and creation of space for projects, industrial base and innovation centre.

UGC norms

Going by the norms of University Grants Commission, the IIIT in Trichy is expected to start off with two Undergraduate programmes: B.Tech in IT, and B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, with intake of 60 students each. The admissions will be based on their scores in Joint Entrance Examinations – Mains conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Once fully functional, the IIITs are envisaged to offer M.Tech. in Intelligence System, Bioinformatics and Software Engineering,Wireless Communication and Computing,  MBA (IT) and MS (Cyber Law and Security). Admissions to MBA (IT) and M.Tech programmes are based on the scores of candidates in Common Admission Test and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) respectively.

The mandate of IIITs encompass carrying out advanced research and development in leading edge technology areas in computer software and hardware; and making available newer software technology for Hindi,  English and other languages. Industries are currently encouraging students from IIITs to engage on live projects, sources said.

TRICHY MEASURES HIGHEST TEMPERATURES IN TAMIL NDAU

Trichy is known to record very high temperatures. Vellore and Trichy has been the hotest places in Tamil Nadu. This May, Trichy measured a temperature of 43'C or 109.4. This has been the highest temperature in Tamil Nadu this summer. Added to that, "Agni Natchathiram" is yet to start in here. That may furthur record high temperatures in here.

The good thing though is that few parts of Tamil Nadu have been receiving a little rain, which gives us reason to believe that Trichy may get some rain and hopefully, we will have beter climate.

The last week has recorded temperatures of 41'C, 40'C, 40'C, 39'C,40'C, 41'C, 41'C, 41'C

                       PVR Cinemas in Trichy would be great, like it would make people here go crazy and would evolve our little and beautiful town.Now a lot of money will be going into this and this would be the first ever full-fledged 3D Cinema in Trichy.

                 Trichy sees another beautiful week,especially because of our CM's coming here.Schools and Colleges in TRICHY have got 5 days of holidays! Hope they keep coming back!So,what about people in Chennai? The CM is always there,won't they get some more holidays??? PEANUTs!!! ;)

              So,what else is going on in Trichy?

             A lot of us are awaiting the opening of the new Grande FEMINA SHOPPING MALL, around HOLY CROSS COLLEGE area.Reports tell us that ,we would have it around June of 2011.Hope its big enough.

           And, I always wanted to know how many people online in Trichy were interested in arts and literature.And also the people who have or would take up profession outside the IT companies and other over-crowded fields of career. Reply me if you are one.
