UNIT II LASERS 9
Introduction – Principle of spontaneous emission and stimulated emission – Population inversion – Pumping methods – Deviation of Einstein’s coefficients A and B – Types of Lasers – He – Ne Laser – Co2 Laser – Nd YAG Laser – Semiconductor Lasers (homojunction and heterojunction) - Characteristics and properties of Laser -
Applications – Industrial – Medical – Holography –Construction and re construction of Hologram – Applications of Hologram.
UNIT III FIBRE OPTICS 9
Principle and propagation of light in optical fibers – Numerical aperture and Acceptance angle – Classification of optical fibers ( Material, refractive Index, Mode ) – Production –
Double crucible technique – Optical fiber losses – Attenuation, Dispersion and Bending losses – Fiber optics communication systems (Block Diagram) – Applications – Sensors ((Temp, Displacement, Pressure).
UNIT IV QUANTUM PHYSICS: 9
Black body radiation – Plank’s theory (deviation) Deduction of Wein’s displacement law and Rayleigh – Jean’s law from Plank’s theory – Compton effect – Theory and experimental verification – Schrodinger’s wave equation – Time independent and time dependent equations – Physical significance of wave function – Particle in one dimensional box – Extension to 3 dimension electrons in metals (qualitative) – degeneracy.
UNIT V CRYSTAL PHYSICS 9
Lattice – Unit cell – Bravais Lattices – Lattice planes – Miller indices – Inter planar distance d in a cubic lattice – Calculation of number of atoms per unit cell, Atomic
radius, Co-ordination number and Packing factor for SC, BCC, FCC and HCP structures– NaCl, ZnS, Diamond and graphite structures.
